DDR2 SO-DIMMs with Thermal Sensor
With the trend to slimmer notebook designs, DRAM heat dissipation is an increasing area of
concern. In order to provide continued performance and density performance increases, Qimonda
supports its customers with SO-DIMMs equipped with thermal-sensors-on-DIMM.
The thermal sensor allows chipsets that support this functionality to measure the specific temperature on the DRAM module, so that the memory load can be adjusted to what is possible in the specific thermal system design, thereby
- increasing system stability,
- increasing memory throughput over other throttling solutions (by guardband reduction),
- protecting the DRAM from potentially catastrophic fails.
In effect, the thermal sensor universally adopts the SO-DIMM to the performance which is
feasible in the actual system thermal design.
Of the various different approaches to DRAM throttling, thermal sensor on SO-DIMM is becoming
the preferred thermal throttling solution for all DDR2/DDR3 SO-DIMMs.
