The constellation city …
From its humble roots as the modest fishing village of Edo, the Tokyo metropolitan area is now home to over 25% of the population of Japan and the largest metropolitan economy in the world. It is more a constellation of cities than one enormous metropolis, and the most extensive mass transit system in the world links all corners of the city. It is a modern city set against a traditional backdrop, which is evident from the many shrines across the urban area, as well as the magnificent Imperial Palace, roughly the size of New York’s Central Park. There is no shortage of activities to entertain and amuse in Tokyo – these include the solemn tea ceremony, breathtaking martial arts and graceful calligraphy for which the city is famed. Tokyo also has an excellent reputation for safety, and street crime is extremely rare. Millions of visitors come to Tokyo each year and it has a large international community, which contributes to Tokyo’s cosmopolitan reputation. This is reflected in the cuisine, a blend of Oriental, fusion and international dishes in addition to the world-famous sushi, which has its origins in Tokyo.
