The beautiful island …
Taipei, located on the island of Taiwan, is the capital of the state referred to as Taiwan, the Republic of China and Chinese Taipei. The proximity of Taiwan to many other Asia Pacific states means that the country has had to compete with its neighbors to attract foreign investment and it has been extraordinarily successful in this endeavor. The first settlers in the Taipei basin were an aboriginal people, but its strategic position has meant that Taiwan has been a melting pot of culture and ethnicity over many centuries. Taiwan was referred to by Portuguese seafarers in the 16th century as Ilha Formosa, meaning Beautiful Island and this reputation lingers today. A temperate climate enhances Taipei’s attraction as a cosmopolitan, modern city with deep traditional roots. One of the best examples of Taipei’s modern outlook is the 101-storey Taipei 101 building, which is the tallest completed skyscraper in the world.
Our Taiwanese location offers a number of cultural highlights. The blending of Hakka,
Taiwanese, indigenous and mainland Chinese backgrounds has produced a rich cultural and social
life. It is an exciting melting pot of religions, architectures, languages, lifestyles and food.
Perhaps it is the sensational gastronomy that best captures the ‘mix and match’ spirit in this
region. You will find cuisines from different parts of the mainland such as Zhejiang, Hunan,
Guangdong, Yunnan, Shanghai, Beijing and Sichuan. These are complemented by the local Taiwanese
cuisine and local delicacies.
